About Me

My name is Lola. I completed my BA in English at Queen Mary University in 2006, and qualified to become a teacher in 2007, completing my PGCE at King’s College London. I have been teaching and tutoring ever since then. Why? You might ask. Because I absolutely love it! I enjoy working with students to help them to overcome any barriers to their learning.

I am passionate about watching my students grow in confidence and attainment and succeed. This is the benefit of tutoring that I feel strongly outstrips whole class teaching. With one to one and small group tuition, more attention is given to each student, and lessons are more personalised, leading to better learning outcomes for all. I would describe my tutoring style as informal and friendly.

I am not overly strict with my students, as my aim is that they enjoy lessons and excel. The first thing I do is seek to find any gaps in students’ learning; then look to address those gaps. The next stage is to increase students’ levels from where they currently are, to their desired grade.

Anyone can achieve in English; you just need to know how.

I have first-hand experience of feeling like you’re not good in a subject. As a child, I used to dread my maths lessons. I was in the middle set, but destined to sit the Foundation paper, with a D grade being the highest ‘pass’ mark available. In my eyes, I was destined to fail. I developed a real hatred for maths, which didn’t help. I was convinced I was ‘rubbish at maths’. Exam day came, and sure enough, I got my D. I was devastated, as, not only was it the one subject I didn’t pass, I knew how important a C grade was for my future prospects. Ever diligent, I enrolled at sixth form, studied my A Levels, put my head down and worked hard. By November, I had achieved my C. I was ecstatic! I wasn’t ‘thick’ after all. This then gave me the breathing space to focus on the rest of my courses in peace.

My motto is this: you have all the tools to succeed within you; you just have to harness them. Be dedicated, persevere and believe in yourself.

Do yourself a favour and don’t expect perfection. Just expect to improve – bit by bit, but you will get there. Each lesson, you are learning and absorbing more than you know. Expect to make mistakes; this is only natural. The endgame is what is important, the culmination of all your efforts and tuition sessions with me – this will not be an overnight miracle!

A Note On Homework

I believe that subsidiary study at home, greatly helps to accelerate a child’s learning. This is why I set homework after every single lesson that a learner does with me. This helps the learner to consolidate the work they have done in the lesson and cement their learning. In addition, when they receive written feedback on the work they have completed, it also helps them to see what they’re doing well, and what they still need to improve.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can start tuition as soon as you’re ready. You can never start too soon or too late. I have tutored some students from year 7, right through to year 11. For some students, I only took them on in year 11 with mere weeks to their exams. What makes the difference is how much effort you put into your work and how thirsty you are for success.

Tuition is a cumulative process – you see more results the longer you continue with it. In terms of academic achievement, this gets better with time. In terms of attitude (whether or not a child enjoys the lesson or has a positive mind-set towards learning) improvements can be seen almost immediately, as when their confidence increases, so does their self-belief.

I don’t offer trial lessons, but you’re welcome to get on the phone to me or send me a text or email whenever you have any queries you have that you might want to run by me. From our conversations, you will get a sense of my teaching style, as well as how I will be able to help your child (their particular areas of strength and weakness) and what improvements you might expect to see over the coming weeks.

Tuition is not all about price and cost. Quality tuition from an experienced and qualified teacher would always cost more than that from a graduate. See tuition as an investment in yourself, you want the very best; not just what is cheap. Furthermore, I believe my prices are reasonable. I don’t charge what I wouldn’t be willing to pay myself. I’d be willing to pay up to £50 an hour for an experienced and qualified teacher who could tutor up to GCSE level. I would not be willing to pay £60 for the same service. I have seen other tutors advertising their services from upwards of £60 to £85, which I do not class as reasonable. As a mother of two children myself, I would be willing to pay a reasonable price for an experienced teacher who is good at their job. In addition, if you find that you’re not able to afford the cost of one-to-one tuition with me, I offer group tuition sessions every Saturday for just £20 an hour. Please contact me for more information.

Yes, I do. I have experience of tutoring children with autism, SEMH, ADHD and dyslexia. I can tailor my teaching to suit each child’s needs, in a way that they are confident and thrive.

I do not recommend siblings being tutored together, unless they are in the same year group, as they can prove to be a distraction to each other. Group or pair tuition works better when students are not too familiar with each other; that way they are able to focus on what is important, which is their work as opposed to chatting.

Of course, I can!  I can tutor you for ESOL, Functional Skills, or even GCSE English – whatever areas you are struggling in. My lessons are tailored to you.

Most definitely. I am an experienced marker for GCSE English, which means I know exactly what examiners are looking for and what you can do to pass English once and for all. In fact, one of my greatest success stories was a student who failed GCSE English twice. He got a grade 3 in school, spent a year doing a resit in college and failed again. With my help, and within a literal timeframe of months, he managed to pass with a grade 7! He was then able to pursue his desired course at university, much to the joy of his parents.

I can provide holiday tuition, but you would need to contact me in advance to check my availability. Holiday tuition can be very beneficial in ensuring you don’t fall behind in school, this is especially the case when students make the transition from primary to secondary school. In fact, research shows that some students call fall back by as many as two grades over the summer holidays. Holiday tuition can help you to not only stay at your current level, but exceed it over the holidays; this is the case no matter what age you are or what year group you’re in.

I would say I am bubbly, enthusiastic and brimming with passion for my subject! I genuinely enjoy teaching and watching my students grow and develop in confidence and attainment.

I inform parents both verbally and in writing of their children’s progress, as well as showing them examples of their children’s work both before and after tuition.

Without meaning to sound too clichéd, I came into the teaching profession because I believe that children are the future. I want to help them by being a beacon that lights up their paths to success. I was finding it increasingly difficult to make the kind of impact that I wanted to make in state schools, with at times more than thirty students to a class. When I tutor, I can teach on a more personal and human level, tailoring my lessons to each child and making sure that they are truly able to succeed and excel.
